If I Fertilize in Late Winter Will my Grass Turn Green Faster?

Not really. We know that lawns fed in the fall will most definitely green up faster the following spring because having nutrients already stored inside allows the grass to use those nutrients quickly once spring hits. However, if I went out today and fed the dormant brown grass it probably won’t green up too much sooner. You see, the brown dormant turf that we see outside right now won’t green up immediately if fed because it has to wait for soil temperatures to rise and thaw out the ground. Warm air temperatures alone can’t wake up lawns because the soil barely a few inches down is still frozen solid from the long winter. Only when the soil temperatures warm enough to thaw the ground will the grass be able to respond to fertilizer. My recommendation to help you make the most of your first lawn fertilizer application of 09’ is to wait until about 50% of your color has returned, that way you know the hungry lawn is active and will take up the nutrition quickly.
