September, 2009 Back to School!

Dear friends, neighbors and colleagues,

I feel like shouting “Wait Up!  I’m not done yet!” when realizing our Summer has come to an end.  Its been another successful season of community-unity filled with charming events and special camaraderie found close to home.

Its been nice spending time at the Kids’ Creekside Village Playground reminiscing about the building task from this time last year.  The Concerts in the Park seemed to have attracted even larger crowds and its just plain cool that our new village candy store will be part of a lasting memory of watching Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory kick off our season….hard to believe it was already a couple of months ago…

Like most families, our home is busy with back to school preparations and I’m stunned that 2 months of summertime living seemly grows our boys faster than the other 10 months of the year.  As the start of school nears, I’m craving a sensible routine yet find myself a little blue and knowing that the hugging and kissing from our youngest will slowly morph into the cool aloofness of the now sophomore in our home.  (Sigh.)

What is it about the seasons that grow our children, right before our eyes and then “blink” they change into independent little people.  I guess its what we want… isn’t it?…. someday, maybe….yes, yes….I think so….sort of.

It is exciting to watch them learn, experience all that changes around them in our school district and know there is more of the unknown for them to experience and explore.   I think that makes us all new students at the start of every school year and I’m thinking there should be a special SPAC graduation ceremony for parents annually, don’t you?

Back to sniffing fresh crayons and pink erasers and pencil sharpening.  Have a happy, safe start to the new school year and best wishes to all our new staff and administrators who have committed to the excellence of our children.

Warmest Regards,

Feature Business: Red Dragon Karate

Q. Describe your business and how you got started.  Red Dragon Karate is a full time martial arts studio with many programs to choose from.  Established in 1981 by Tony Irvin, the school teaches an American Freestyle System with influences found from many different styles including Tae Kwon Do and our base style of Pentjak Silat.  Owner and chief instructor, Jeff Melander, began training here at age 9, acquired the school in 198 just before his 16th birthday and today is a 5th degree black belt who leads approximately 25 classes each week.

Q. Are you known for anything special?  We provide quality training to anyone who wants to better themselves through martial arts practice.

Q. What do you like most about your business?  Teaching students, young and old, the positive way of life that the martial arts provide.  Helping them to achieve their individual goals and become more confident in themselves so they can handle whatever life may bring them.  Staying in top physical shape myself while promoting the benefits of physical fitness, self-defense and character development.

Q. What do you feel is your biggest challenge with your business?  Competing with all of the other activities that people put into their busy lives.  Also, clearing up misconceptions about what karate is.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you?  I was born and raised in Ballston Spa and strive to give back to the community the benefits that martial arts training has provided to me.  We are a proud member of the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association and participate in most events that the village promotes.

Q. Anything else?  We offer Self-defense workshops each month to prepare ourselves for this sometimes hostile world.  We also offer family classes so that moms, dads, brothers, & sisters can train together.  About 80% of Red Dragon’s enrollment is families.
